Are they still the laughingstock as it goes past warranty? I’ve heard of rumblings that they become mechanical and electrical nightmares when the odometer goes past 70-80k.
Im only asking since I may or may not be considering one. More like 25% considering it as I still love my Durango but...I really don't need all that space or capability.

I asked a shop about this, and not really. The Mk6's have timing chain issues, but those are repairable as long as you catch them. 2014-15's had turbo failures due to an impeller imbalance. And the water pumps are plastic, so those can go. Other than those issues, they seem to be quite reliable mechanically. I would advise you to get a 2016-17 Sport, because no sunroof, but they have the performance and lighting packages.

I’m more afraid of age, personally. My experience is that German plastics, rubber, and adhesives just go “I can’t even” at about the 7-10 year mark.
My brother has had two consecutive 2.0 GTIs where he has put 25k mi/year on them, well past the 100k mark in both cases, with almost no unexpected repairs.
The old 1.8t that he had (2003?) was an absolute nightmare, though. That reputation still follows them around.

Hopefully at some Oppo meet I can drive one. I’m not sure I’ve even seen one before.

Electrical issues past 70k?
If Audi’s are anything to go by I’d say you’ll be doing well to get past 30k

I put around 30-35k miles a year on every car so reliability is of Paramount importance

Two generations mentioned, and the 14&15’s were either fixed or not a problem. The water pump isn’t super common, but it’s a known thing.
Compared to the competition(cough ST), it’s a short list.

Eh, I’ve had 2 older GTIs, a 12yo MK4 with 200k and a 10yo MK5 with 70k along with a new MK7. They are no different than any other car. Things will get old and break and just need general maintenance. The MK4 had some sticky plastic and broken door handles but that’s about it. The MK5 was solid with 0 issues. It more comes down to previous owners following the book for maintenance than anything else.

Current 2010 Mk6 owner and the only complaint I have is one I had with a Mk5 Jetta I had. The headliner seems to peel away from the ceiling at the 7 yr mark. I believe that's because they're so we'll sealed. Opening the doors of a modern VW during the summer is like opening the door to all the levels in Dante's Inferno.

Isn’t that the perfect oPPo car though? One that always needs repairs?

That always where I end up with these fun car threads . “Only blah, blah, and blah fail — oh and sometimes all the blah — but other than that...!” There's a reason why I own a Pontiac, the greatest brand in the world!

All the adhesives in my 96 Golf are fine. The only interior bits that aren’t up to snuff are the top of steering wheel making black flakes and the seat leather getting tough and seams splitting. Should mention that I think the only original interior bits on mine are headliner and carpet. MkIVs had lots of interior problems, though.

Here’s what was left of my heater core plastic nipples after just 10 years. I finally devised a workaround so I could chop off the bad parts. G erman-built FTW!
My ‘95 Golf didn’t have any of these problems in the 10 years I had it, but to be fair, there was a LOT less to break than on a modern VW.

I mean, our Mk3s were built in Mexico. Not sure where all the parts were sourced from.

I had a MKV and sold it at around 115k. I had no issues beyond regular maintenance. It was only 5 years old at the time, but it was a great car. I have a MK7 on my short list for the next vehicle. I will be looking within the next 4-6 months to make a move on something. It is that or a Wrangler. Not exactly the same segment, but both fit my criteria, small and zippy/fun, or can go just about anywhere.
